Outsource Social Media and Grow Your Business While You Sleep

It’s Thursday.  I sit down to write my morning blog-post and a thought crosses my mind: "I want to rearrange the social-media icons on my home page.  It will only take a second."  Innocent right?

Two and-and-a-half hours later, here we are.  No, I’m not avoiding my responsibilities.  No, I’m not procrastinating.  No, I’m not in denial (well, maybe a little).  I’m engaging in social media.

Here is a brief smattering of what I've accomplished:

  • Fully updated my Google profile and enabled talk mode
  • Linked my YouTube account across several different sites
  • Set up a new Flickr (and uploaded nineteen photos)
  • Imported my blog onto Facebook

 

That might not sound impressive, but right now I feel that same sense-of-accomplishment you get after going to the gym. In fact, if I went to bed in twenty minutes?  I would consider this day seized.

The fact is, an effective social media marketing strategy takes time and energy.  Lots of it.

This is why most small-businesses aren’t using the social web properly.  Every owner has heard "you need to be on Facebook” but very few have been willing to part with the necessary time and energy to integrate an effective plan.

 

The savvy entrepreneur has one of two options:

1)    Bite-the-bullet and invest the money to learn the skill-set of social media marketing.  After doing so, train people what you know and/or do-it-yourself if it’s your thing.

2)    Outsource it NOW to someone who already knows what they're doing.

 

Admittedly I find marketing on the web to be quite fun, hence the reason that I'm actively engaged in the admin of my profiles.  What can I say, I’m a formatting freak.

As many of you know, however, I’m a huge believer in outsourcing just about everything.  This is why I employ the services of a social media manager (SMMgr).

I create some content (like what you're reading now) and my SMMgr builds my brand, expands my sphere of influence, and funnels valuable connections to my business via 6-8 different social media sites.  In certain cases, they even aggregate content for me.  Each site is at work 24/7, even while I sleep.

As if that's not enough, here are six reasons why you should consider doing the same:

 

It's cheaper than you think.

Big companies often hire several full-time staff members or full-scale social media PR firm fors tens-of-thousands-of-dollars per month. The small business owner can do the same job (at a smaller scale) for as little as $150 per week.

 

ANY business can benefit (even local businesses, mom-and-pop-shops, and MLMs).

Social media marketing is all about doing two things: using the internet to find new customers and building relationships with those you already have.  These objectives are essential in any industry.  And social media can accomplish them on a local, national, or international level.

 

Unless social media is your business, you're not an expert on the subject.

Social media can be incredibly intimidating, given that most people feel like they should use it but don't really know how.  There's a lot more to it than just amassing audiences and blurting out your sales message (many folks on Twitter have yet to realize this).  You pay an accountant to do your taxes.  Pay a SMMgr to do your network marketing and PR.

 

Measurable ROI.

If you know how much each customer is worth, it's very easy to determine how effective your social media strategy needs to be in order to justify the expense. Furthermore, good social media strategies build relationships and increase average customer value.

 

It will make you better at your business.

Social media is all about sharing what-you-know and adding value to the world.  As you sit down and really think, create, and communicate your expert knowledge you cannot help but become a more masterful professional.

 

One less thing to do, one more thing to feel good about.

A SMMgr can handle all the details and admin, allowing you to focus on your passions within your business. While creating content does require a little extra work, you'll probably experience the same home-from-the-gym feeling that I mentioned earlier.

 

How do you find the right company to meet the needs of your brand?  Of course you can go to Google. However I recommend that you find a SMMgr within the realm of social media. If they truly are worth their weight, they should be able to find you.

I've coma across a lot of people who have started outsourcing their social networking sites. I think it is quite effective as long as they are able to keep it somehow personal while at the same time doing business.

I think that more and more people or companies are doing it (outsourcing their social activities) than you think. Or they are seriously looking at solutions that can streamline, enhance and speed up the reward of their social activities Why? Because I encounter companies and agencies every day that say they dont have time to do it nor do they care to, they just want to reap the benefits. I know it’s selfish and disingenuous but…

I’m ok with that. Why? because isn’t social media from that standpoint, just an extension of what a PR or ad agency already does? In their eyes it is. It’s marketing and PR. They will say, “What’s the difference”? Just do it for me and we’ll pay you. I’ll do it and get you started, but I’ll train you to do it for your selves and your company. You need to take ownership.

As social continues to grow and grow, some people just don’t want to do “it”, the social stuff, they would prefer that someone else do it for them- and you know what? There are plenty of people that will do it and… Do it well and.. You’ll never know the difference.
